Newborn Giant Panda Cubs of the Base Class of 2022 Make Public Appearance for National Day

To celebrate the National Day, newborn giant panda cubs of Grade 2022 of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (hereinafter referred to as the Panda Base) made their public appearance in the Sunshine Delivery House.

This event, themed around giant panda enrichment, combines the national treasure that is the giant panda with National Day, and the national sport ping pong to display the scientific research and breeding achievements of the Chengdu Panda Base and celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the P.R.C. For this festive day, the keepers used wood, hemp rope, and other materials to make various enrichment tools inspired by ping pong paddles and balls, so that giant pandas could try their luck on the ping pong table. These adorable little athletes amused themselves on the ping pong table, giving some novel new strategies for ping pong players, and wishing the 2022 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals Chengdu great success in their own way. At the event site, the keepers holding the baby pandas lined up and waved the five-star red flag of China to wish everyone a happy National Day. Then they placed baby pandas on the table to write “73” to celebrate National Day and wish the motherland prosperity in a unique way.

According to a spokesperson for the Panda Base, they have successfully bred 15 giant pandas this year, including four twins. The heaviest newborn cub weighed 218.5 grams.

Among these newborn cubs, there are some new members from celebrity families. For instance, the giant panda Olympia, named by Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, successfully gave birth to her first cub, a little baby girl, expanding the Olympics family in the Panda Base. Ji Li, a member of the well-known Cheng Clan, also gave birth to her fourth child. The little grey cub drew the most attention out of his brothers and sisters. Mei Huan, a giant panda originally born at the Zoo Atlanta in the US successfully became a mother, just like her elder sister Mei Lun, giving birth to a male cub this year.

Now, all the newborn cubs are good and healthy; the heaviest of them already weighs nearly 6 kilograms. They all live in the Sunshine Delivery House and Moonlight Delivery House. Thirteen giant panda cubs participated in the event. During National Day, visitors to the Panda Base could see them sleeping soundly in bed in the visiting areas of the two delivery houses (exhibition hours: 8:00-18:00). Not long afterwards, they will be moved to outdoor venues to meet visitors.
