The science popularization team of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding held a Winter Volunteer Salon — Museum Exploration and Guide Training Activities on schedule — to improve the professionalism of the science popularization volunteers. This includes reinforcing their understanding of the protection work for rare wild animals represented by giant panda and red panda, improving scientific research, and understanding the status of various science popularization facilities. Museum Exploration and Guide Training Activities for the registered science popularization volunteers are held by the science popularization team in different stages.
The three stages of Winter Volunteer Salon Activities are as follows:
1. Museum exploration
During this stage, science popularization trainers led volunteers in exploring Chengdu Giant Panda Museum’s exhibition hall visiting route and taught them how to use interactive equipment. Through this interesting and immersive course, volunteers discovered the amazing panda world and learnt how to protect the environment. This was to make full preparations for the official opening and operation of Chengdu Giant Panda Museum and the science popularization services in the future.
2. Special training
The ability improvement program included panda base enrichment and animal welfare, behavior training of red panda, theme-based environment description method and panda-themed chat method. This was meant to improve the abilities of the volunteer tour guides in an all-round way.
Dr. Guo Yulei and James Ayala, two researchers of the panda base, were invited to give a lecture on "English tour description about giant panda" and "animal behavior training." This knowledge may help the volunteers in the future.
3. On-site demonstration and simulation
During this stage, science popularization trainers led volunteers to visit the base, introducing them to the functions of various science popularization facilities. The relevant information of animal houses, the guide locations and the matching tour description topics. This on-site rehearsal was an opportunity for volunteers to apply skills learnt from the lectures, so as to provide better tour guide services in the future.
This training has brought volunteers with important knowledge about science popularization. This training encourages volunteers to be active participants and provides them with more opportunities. We believe that the science popularization volunteers who graduated from the training program will become better volunteers.
