In 2019, the Science & Technology Department of Sichuan Province carried out a lustrum periodic assessment over provincial key laboratories from March to May. The laboratory of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding concentrated on organizing relevant personnel to sort out and summarize all results made by it in the recent five years, to the purpose of displaying its real strength during the periodic assessment. After preliminary assessment, site inspection and comprehensive review, this periodic assessment came to a successful end.
The Science & Technology Department of Sichuan Province recently announced the result of the periodic assessment over provincial key laboratories (in the comprehensive field of biology). The Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology on Endangered Wildlife was established with the assistance of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Sichuan University was selected!
During the assessment for the national key laboratory cultivation bases co-constructed with provincial and ministerial efforts, Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology on Endangered Wildlife, one of whose supporting institutions is Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, was rated as excellent laboratory, becoming one of the 4 excellent laboratories out of the 21 key laboratories in Sichuan Province in this field.
The Laboratory (in the Panda Base) is described below.
In 1997, the Laboratory was founded with the assistance from the National Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, the Planning Commission of Sichuan Province and Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
The Laboratory was officially approved as “Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory for Endangered Animal Reproduction and Genetic Conservation” in December 2001.
The “Postdoctoral Research Workstation” was established in 2003.
The Laboratory was successfully approved as “Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology on Endangered Wildlife” in 2007, and gained support from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Sichuan University.
The Academician Workstation was established in 2018.
Based on demands for giant panda in-situ and ex-situ conservation as well as advantages of the Laboratory, the “Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology on Endangered Wildlife” intends to conduct research directed in the following aspects: conservation and management of the Giant Panda National Park; husbandry and breeding; conservation genetics and population conservation; and prevention and control of major diseases.
The Laboratory has a research team consisting of 84 permanent staff members, and 48 instruments each valued over RMB0.1 million and total valued over RMB10 million.
